Shim units
Adjustment without stopping production
For OEMs and system integrators in the automotive, aerospace and mechanical engineering industries
In modern manufacturing processes, shim units play a crucial role in compensating for manufacturing tolerances. During the process known as shimming, the units compensate for deviations of between one and one thousandth of a millimeter to ensure precise fits and optimal clearances. Shimming often used to rely on the experience of the operators, which made it a time-consuming and error-prone process. However, as automation levels increase and quality requirements become more stringent – particularly among OEMs in the automotive and aerospace industries – this approach is reaching its limits.
The goal of automated shimming is clear: to achieve a higher level of precision, speed and reproducibility in tolerance compensation in highly automated manufacturing processes. All in real time, without interrupting production. The shim units are fully integrated into the control system and can be operated via the PLC or manually.
Automated shimming enables consistent, repeatable and highly precise tolerance compensation:
- Measuring system detects deviations in real time
- Data is transmitted directly to the shim unit
- Automatic adjustment takes place without stopping production

Portfolio Expansion
Single-use dampers
Series SingleStop
The launch of our series SingleStop of single-use dampers expands our product portfolio for damping technology – bringing us one step closer to becoming a full-range supplier. Zimmer Group’s single-use dampers are irreversible safety dampers designed for use in emergencies to protect structural elements by dissipating energy in a controlled manner. These dampers can absorb energy only once, at which point they permanently deform and must be replaced. Thanks to their long strokes, single-use dampers dissipate energy over a long distance to minimize the mechanical stress on the equipment. To cover a wide range of applications, our current product portfolio consists of 16 installation sizes, which will be expanded in the future.
Single-use dampers are a cost-effective safety solution for absolute emergencies. Lower risk of damage, fewer unplanned downtimes and thus significantly reduced costs.
Your benefits:
- High energy dissipation: They evenly dissipate up to 100% of the energy during an impact
- Design: cost-effective, compact and lightweight
- Reliability: they provide maximum protection in critical situations and prevent costly downtime of machines and lines
